Lavender Harvest – 2024
Our harvest this year has been a lesson in patience and keeping track of the weather reports. As we headed into July, our field on the side of the Welsh mountain began to turn a soft shade of purple. In mid-July we began cutting stems from the lavender plants we’d planted out last year. The stems were about 25cm long with a lavender head of 4cm, so perfect for bunching & drying in the barn. This dried lavender is then used to fill all our lavender bags.
We then had to wait for a weather window of at least 3 days in order to cut the older plants for oil. Finally at the end of July we got a few days of hot, dry weather. So, our full team (plus some new, younger recruits), headed up to the field armed with sharpened secateurs, sunscreen, sun hats & freshly baked cinnamon buns. We cut enough lavender for 5 one tonne sacks which were then taken down to Jon at Mendip Lavender to be distilled for oil. The oil needs to settle now before it can be used in our botanical products.
The lavender plants have now had a further trim in order to let light and air into the crown. This will encourage strong re-growth so that we can have a successful harvest next year.
